THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AUTONOMOUS LEARNING METHOD FOR THE STUDENTS OF ENGISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IN MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF YOGYAKARTA


CHAPTER 1


INTRODUCTION


            Today, the field of education in Indonesia has created a diverse range of learning method to achieve an effectiveness and successful learning. This was deliberately done to improve the quality of student learning. Moreover, the fact that many methods have not succeeded in achieving the desired target. Consequently, the students cannot learn to the fullest. Therefore, many methods are arrangement to obtain the best results.
Additionally, participation of students is also very influential to develop of education. So that, established learning methods that expect active participation from the students such as autonomous learning method.

One of the learning methods used by English Education Department in UMY. The method used is the autonomous learning method. The meaning of autonomous learning method is independently learning. The method is still rarely used by the faculty and the other universities. Because of, it disadvantages from the autonomous learning method is it provides itself to the teaching of the facts while placing little emphasis on problem solving, decision making, analytical thinking, or transfer of learning. (Black. 1993) lecturing is not helpful to meeting student’s individual needs. Lecturing brings the problem of limited attention cover on the part of learners. In addition, the learning method is considered to be aggravating their students. The courage of teachers in English Education Department is applying this method to create to be students who are creative, active, and critical in completing all the tasks that given. Additionally, make their students when the outside, they could be useful for the society around them.

The purpose of autonomous learning method is making a clever and smart student who does not only rely on explanation from teachers in the classroom. Autonomous learning method becomes teachers as mediator to give outline of the material when the learning takes place in the classroom. Besides, the students must be actively to complete detail the materials if they want get the best result. Is the method will be effective for the learning takes place?

 

This all can work well if there is willingness from the student to study hard and the teachers also have to always be willing to give support and help the student’s every time. According to students, without support from teachers, this method probably will make students becomes overburdened. What will the method considered effective for students if there is not a balance between the teachers with their students?

The relation with applying the autonomous learning method will occur some question in here: what is the autonomous learning method? What the effectiveness of autonomous learning method? What the obstacles for students facing the autonomous learning method?

There are several methods of learning system used by many universities in the world just as race course to gauge how the academic skills already who have by the students. In this paper, the researcher will conduct a survey to some people in UMY that used the autonomous learning method. This was done to determine the effectiveness using the autonomous learning method. In this paper will attempt to discuss the problem that facing the students with this method.

  • Statement of the problem


The key point in this paper will focus on the effectiveness of autonomous learning method. 1) How is the effectiveness of autonomous learning method used at PBI UMY for students? 2) What are the obstacles facing students in studying using autonomous learning method? 3) What the advantages and disadvantages from the autonomous learning method? All the answer to these problems will be explained clearly in the paper.

  • Purpose of the research paper


The purpose of make this research paper is to describe of the effectiveness of autonomous learning method. Furthermore, the paper also find out the effectiveness of autonomous learning method for students in PBI UMY. Moreover, the paper also finds out the obstacles that facing for students PBI UMY. In addition, the paper also to flatten some the advantages and disadvantages from the autonomous learning method. That’s all to create graduated students who become actively students from PBI UMY better than the other graduated universities.

 

  • Significance of the problem


Autonomous learning methods is a good way or a way to enhance or sharpen the skill or brains of students that they have to be a student who is active and critical in resolving or concluding the problem in the classroom and the outside. This paper will try to analyze the effectiveness of autonomous learning in PBI UMY, and it will make the lecturers were able to see even the ability to assess each of students that they teach if the method is effective and they can develop well.

 

  • Delimitation of the research


The research will be conducted through the Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. The questionnaire created to determine the effectiveness of autonomous learning method will be administered at least to 30 students from class A PBI UMY. Additionally, we will do interviewed to some people from class A PBI UMY to get more the accurate data besides we just give some questions to the students class A PBI UMY. This all also result in conclusions being reached trough the analysis of the data will have relevance with this research paper.

 

  • Method of approach


I will use method on this research paper is to collect accurate data like a questionnaire and interview. It is containing at least to 30 students from class A PBI UMY, concerning question and to some people from students class A PBI UMY will the interview about how far the effectiveness of autonomous learning. Before making the scheme of voting poll, the students will analyze or answer the questions carefully. Thus, this method will be used as a conclusion of the feasibility of applying the percentage to the effectiveness of autonomous learning.

  • Definition of terms


Autonomous learning method. The approach where students study independently choosing from among different resources those are available so that as all focus on student responsibility and active participation for his/her own learning.
